Life at Konecranes More than 13 years of cranes, change, and teamwork

CAREER STORY

Meet Peter Monaghan

More than 13 years of cranes, change, and teamwork

When Peter Monaghan joined Konecranes as a crane salesperson, he already knew the business from the outside.

His career had started with hands-on work in rigging, crane ropes, and height safety systems, giving him a strong technical foundation and experience working closely with customers and project teams."My journey started with hands-on work in rigging, crane ropes, and height safety systems,"  he says. "Through working on projects involving Konecranes, I developed a real interest in the company and what it stood for." That interest eventually led him to join the company.

More than 13.5 years later, his reason for staying hasn't changed much."What continues to keep me here is the people — the diversity of personalities, the strong sense of camaraderie, and the shared experience of working together every day."

Seeing the business evolve

Over more than a decade with Konecranes, Peter has experienced significant changes across the organisation. "I've seen significant changes, including shifts in management structures and business acquisitions," he says.

While those changes have brought new challenges, they have also created opportunities to learn and develop."What has helped me adapt is focusing on the people side of the business — working with different personalities, collaborating closely, and staying open to change."

For him, that approach has made it easier to grow alongside the business as it continues to evolve.

Delivering under pressure

One project stands out when he reflects on his career so far. "A key highlight for me was the a level crossing project in 2016,"  he says.

"It was a demanding project that required delivering two 230-ton portal cranes within a tight six-month timeline. It was a high-pressure situation, but through strong teamwork and focus, we delivered the cranes on time and achieved a profitable outcome."

Learning from experience

Throughout his career, Peter has combined formal development opportunities with practical experience on the job. "My growth has come through both formal learning and day-to-day experience," he says.

One learning experience that had a lasting impact was Konecranes' situational leadership training. "The situational leadership course was particularly valuable in helping me better understand how to manage teams."

He has also made use of the company's technical knowledge resources. "I also make use of the company's technical knowledge resources, which offer a lot of depth for those willing to explore them."

Trust, relationships, and perspective

After more than 13 years in the industry, Peter believes strong relationships are built through consistency rather than reputation alone. "I believe trust is built through personal interactions and reliability — while the brand may open doors, it's consistent performance that builds lasting relationships."  That perspective continues to shape how he approaches both customers and colleagues.

At the same time, experience has taught him the importance of maintaining balance. "I've learned the importance of stepping away from work and focusing on personal interests. Maintaining that balance is essential for both well-being and long-term performance."

It's a practical lesson gained over many years in the industry — one that helps him bring the same focus and reliability to work every day.
