Life at Konecranes From field service to regional sales
CAREER STORY
Meet Rodney Milburn
From field service to regional sales
Starting at Konecranes
Rodney joined Konecranes in 2011 after relocating from Melbourne to Sydney. “My journey with Konecranes began in 2011 when I relocated from Melbourne to Sydney. I applied for a service planner role, but it had already been filled. The branch manager offered me a technician position instead, and that’s where everything began.” He says the company’s “global presence and reputation as an original equipment manufacturer” influenced his decision to join.
Moving into projects, supervision and planning
As his responsibilities expanded, Rodney moved from service work into coordinating larger tasks. “I progressed to running service projects and eventually took on the role of service supervisor/planner for the Sydney branch in 2013/14.” When branch structures and systems shifted, including the introduction of Siebel, he adapted again. “The introduction of Siebel and changes in branch structure led me to transition into sales, where I embraced the inside sales and service sales functions. My adaptability and willingness to embrace change have been key to my success.”
Development that supported the work
One learning experience stands out clearly. “I credit the High‑Performance Individual Training (HPI) program, completed in 2013, as a pivotal factor in my career development.” He adds: “I found the program invaluable in shaping my journey at Konecranes.”
A project he still remembers
Rodney recalls the crane installation at a paper mill in Smithfield as one of his most complex tasks. “This project involved removing the papermill roof, setting up two 400‑ton mobile cranes, and replacing existing cranes with 20‑ton double girder cranes.” The work required precise coordination. “Managing the logistical challenges — including the crane installation with a fifty‑six‑meter reach — was a standout achievement.”
Seeing the business change
During his 15 years at Konecranes, Rodney has seen major shifts. “I have observed exponential changes in the business culture over my 15 years, with a strong focus on leadership training and career growth opportunities.” He highlights the company’s inclusive approach, saying he appreciates “the company’s inclusive culture and commitment to investing in its people.”
Advice he shares with others
Rodney keeps his guidance practical and consistent with how he works. “My advice to newcomers is to engage actively with the team and take advantage of continuous learning and development programs.” He adds that his own experience shows “the power of adaptability, continuous learning, and embracing opportunities for growth.”
