Life at Konecranes Traineeship in Marketing
Meet Ronja Holmila - Marketing trainee
Ronja Holmila is in her fourth year of studying business at LUT University, currently pursuing a Master's degree in International Marketing Management. Ronja has always been interested in the commercial field, as she believes it offers broad career opportunities. Additionally, she is fascinated by international business, which is why getting a job at an international company has felt like a lucky break for her. In the spring, she was looking for her first job in her field, as in previous years, Ronja had worked in other positions. The summer job at Konecranes intrigued her because of the job description, which included a variety of marketing tasks and independent projects.
During this past summer, what made the job particularly enjoyable for Ronja was the continuous learning, the offered projects, and interesting challenges where she could apply the strategic thinking and tools learned at university: "I have actually been able to do practical marketing work and not just assistant tasks."
We asked what qualities or skills help in getting and succeeding in a summer job in marketing. Ronja highlights a visual eye and adaptability, and of course, enthusiasm for marketing: "I feel that in my position, visual skills and adaptability are an advantage, as the job includes many different types of tasks and the days vary. It's also good to have organizational skills because you need to be able to schedule and prioritize among different tasks. And naturally, a good attitude and passion for marketing and its development are needed. When you can't offer long work experience during the application phase, your enthusiasm and attitude become the number one thing that stands out."
Ronja's days usually start between 8 and 9 am at the Hyvinkää office or remotely, depending on the day. They are spent working on a wide range of marketing tasks: reference stories, updating websites, social media, image editing, creating ads, and photography, using various marketing tools. There are all kinds of tasks where creativity can also be utilized. The days also include planning upcoming projects and organizing events. "On a typical day, I usually plan the day's schedule based on the calendar in the morning. Marketing work is very project-based, so on one day I might be advancing several different projects at the same time. There are also Teams meetings and collaborative workshops with colleagues, which I like because working together usually results in a better outcome," Ronja comments.
The job tasks can also be influenced by personal interests, which Ronja appreciates. "I think it's wonderful when the days vary and the tasks are diverse so that you can somewhat choose what to schedule for each day," Ronja comments. Even though the summer job is Ronja's first job in her field, she has still been able to work on larger independent projects.
Thanks to the marketing tasks, Ronja has gotten to know a wide range of people within the company, which has helped her quickly become familiar with the company. Working in a small team where she has been encouraged and helped with new tasks has been rewarding and instructive, according to Ronja. She appreciates the support and encouragement she has received from her team and how she was immediately included in different projects and events.
The summer job has brought with it a lot of learning about the marketing of a global company and the work culture of a large organization. Ronja says she has learned to use various marketing tools extensively and gained valuable insights into B2B marketing planning and strategy work. The best things about the summer job at Konecranes are the responsibility and the freedom to do what she wants, as well as the good teammates: "Konecranes offers its employees an exceptional amount of freedom in their tasks, which is really great. I have largely been able to plan my workdays and influence the projects I'm involved in. I feel that I have actually been able to make an impact and do things that interest me personally. The supervisors do not 'breathe down your neck' but trust their employees. The summer in Konecranes marketing has given me a lot more than I dared to expect." She also values that she has been able to work with international marketing team members.
