What inspired you to pursue a technical career?
‘’My mother, a single parent raising us in Bacolod, Philippines, inspired me. I vividly remember her skillfully repairing a secondhand electric fan, sparking my interest in becoming an electrician. Encouraged by my mom, I pursued electrical engineering, becoming one of 6 women in a class of 42. After applying to many companies, Konecranes Philippines offered me the role of Service Technician.’’
What can companies do to encourage more women in technical careers?
‘’It is necessary to eliminate gender discrimination and establish true gender equity. At Konecranes, I experienced this equity, empowering me to grow and seek new opportunities. I encourage women in male-dominated fields to persist. Overcome barriers with determination; no company should hesitate to welcome us.’’
Describe your journey as a female technician in the workplace?
‘’My initial challenge was integrating with my all-male colleagues, but I found them to be inclusive and encouraging. This motivated me to learn and grow. At Konecranes, inclusivity is a core value. It has been key to my success as a female technician, demonstrating Konecranes' commitment to “Doing the right thing”.’’
What skills are essential for success in your role as a technician?
‘’As a technician, key skills for success are effective communication, efficient teamwork, and informed leadership. Clear communication with customers is crucial, as we are the frontline liaisons with customers, and their feedback helps us enhance our services. Teamwork is crucial for collaborative efforts, ensuring services are delivered seamlessly.'’
