As an international student in Gender and Diversity, I’ve always had a passion for advocating DEI. Growing up, I experienced firsthand the impact that gender and cultural differences can have on one's opportunities and treatment in society. These experiences made me realize the importance of creating environments where everyone, regardless of their background or identity, feels valued and empowered.

Ancilla Domini Giannina Surya | DEI Trainee

What inspired you to start a career in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI)?

"As an international student in Gender and Diversity, I’ve always had a passion for advocating DEI. Growing up, I experienced firsthand the impact that gender and cultural differences can have on one's opportunities and treatment in society. These experiences made me realize the importance of creating environments where everyone, regardless of their background or identity, feels valued and empowered."

What does DEI mean to you?

"DEI means creating a work environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to bring their full selves to work. DEI fosters a culture where diverse perspectives are not only welcomed but are essential to driving innovation, creativity, and overall success. It ensures that all employees have equal access to opportunities and resources, and that differences are celebrated. DEI means committing to continuous learning and improvement, challenging biases, and promoting equity in all aspects of the workplace."

Why is DEI relevant for Konecranes?

"Firstly, diverse teams bring a variety of perspectives, experiences, and ideas. Secondly, when employees feel valued, respected, and included, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated, which can improve overall job satisfaction. Additionally, DEI initiatives help to identify and mitigate biases in recruitment, promotion, and daily interactions. Finally, DEI is also a strategic imperative for sustainable business success."

What do you think of DEI initiatives at Konecranes?

"Initiatives such as various DEI-related trainings, employee resource groups (ERG), and diverse hiring practices have been essential in raising awareness and driving cultural change. Of course, there is always room for improvement, and it's important that DEI initiatives are not seen as one-time projects but as ongoing commitments. I am optimistic about the future as long as Konecranes remains dedicated to continuous learning and improvement in their DEI efforts
