Life at Konecranes Great leadership starts with understanding

CAREER STORY

Meet Sini Blom

Great leadership starts with understanding

Balancing people management with the fast pace of IT development requires both empathy and adaptability. For Sini Blom, supporting her team’s well-being while ensuring systems and processes run smoothly is at the heart of her everyday work.

Healthy and inclusive culture

Having worked at Konecranes for eight years, Sini Blom’s role as the Chapter Management and People Manager combines day-to-day people management and the oversight of IT platforms. Her work sits at the intersection of people, processes, and technology.

“What fascinates me about working with people is the diversity of the individuals I meet. It’s rewarding to support people on their own career paths,” she says.

An important part of Sini’s role is staying closely connected to her team. She dedicates significant time to discussions.

“I want to invest time in conversations, so I understand how people are feeling. That way, I can make sure no one is overloaded and that support is available when needed.”

Sini describes her team as having a healthy balance between working hard and keeping things light and positive. While many team members work remotely, they meet at the Hyvinkää office at least once a month to see and discuss together – not just business-talk but also casually.

“The atmosphere is respectful and open. Everyone can be themselves, and there’s always room for humor.”

Keeping things moving in IT

Alongside people management, Sini plays an active role in developing HR systems. Her responsibilities include development work, contract management, and documentation. She’s also contributing to sustainability, health, and safety topics.

“No two days are the same. Systems and ways of working are constantly evolving, and things change quickly. I really enjoy that constant development,” she explains.

Much of her team’s work revolves around solving technical challenges and driving ongoing improvements. For Sini, even small wins matter:

“It feels good when we manage to solve something, no matter how small. Those everyday successes are important.”

Management style built on understanding

For Sini, leadership is about understanding individuals and helping them grow. The same patterns and methods don’t apply to everyone.

“Different people need different things. One person might enjoy going through materials in detail, while another learns best by trying things out in practice,” she explains.

She supports her team members encouraging them to take by offering opportunities to learn and develop, whether through training, new responsibilities, or even sometimes internal role changes.

“I always try to listen to what people are interested in. When you’re genuinely interested in something, it’s easier to succeed,” she says.

Over the years, Sini has also recruited trainees and supported their transition into new roles:

“One of my goals as a manager is to help people grow. It’s rewarding to see someone progress and gain new opportunities.”

At the same time, she’s committed to her own development. In a fast-changing work environment, continuous learning is essential. Sini wants to keep developing her leadership skills and she emphasizes that it’s important not to get stuck in old ways of working.

Recharging at the summer cottage

Outside of work, Sini’s life revolves around her family: her husband and three daughters. Much of her time goes into everyday family life, including supporting her children’s hobbies.

She values time at the family’s summer cottage, which offers a chance to recharge and slow down.

“Simple things like the sauna, swimming in the lake, or even ice swimming in winter help me relax,” she says.
