Life at Konecranes From Service Tech to VP

CAREER STORY

Meet James Dowe

From Service Tech to VP: James Dowe’s 30-year climb at Konecranes

Every great story starts with a single step. For James Dowe, it began on November 24, 1992, when he joined Konecranes in Sydney as a young service technician. Born and raised in regional Australia, James had spent years exploring the vast landscapes of his home country, chasing opportunities, and gathering experiences that shaped his character. With an electrician’s background, he quickly adapted to the role, setting the stage for a career that would span over three decades.

When asked what experiences shaped his leadership journey at Konecranes, James reflected on how much the company and his role have evolved since he joined in 1992 as a service technician."Over 31 years, I have seen Konecranes evolve from paper processes to digital platforms, from reactive safety to a culture built on mental health, inclusivity, and the voices of our frontline teams. A turning point came in 2008 with the inaugural Branch Manager Training in Sydney. It was an immersive program that reshaped how I approached leadership, operations, and customer engagement. Since then, I have taken part in numerous training initiatives and received support for my university studies. All of this reflects Konecranes’ deep commitment to investing in its people and shaping future leaders."

When asked about the biggest challenge of his career, James points to the COVID-19 pandemic as the ultimate test. At the time, he was simultaneously overseeing the redevelopment of the Smithfield facility and managing the integration of MHE Demag. "The COVID-19 pandemic was, without question, the ultimate test. At the time, I was leading the redevelopment of our Smithfield facility and overseeing the integration of MHE Demag, two major undertakings made even more complex by the global crisis. We were merging two former competitors, aligning under a shared vision, and navigating countless operational and cultural challenges."

When asked what helped him stay focused during difficult times and how it shaped the culture at Konecranes, James shares the key values that guided him through. What guided me through was a clear focus on our customers, making decisions rooted in integrity, and pushing innovation across technology, safety, and operations. But most importantly, it was the strength and commitment of our teams—coming together, collaborating, and supporting one another in turning obstacles into milestones.

In the end, we built the largest and most resilient crane business in Australia and laid the foundation for a stronger, more unified culture moving forward. We now have an organisation where career development is built into every role, with training, mentorship, and inclusivity creating an environment where excellence is enabled, not imposed.

When asked what advice he would give to newcomers and how he maintains balance, James keeps it direct and thoughtful. “Embrace learning, seek mentorship, build relationships across borders, and keep asking questions. That’s how careers grow, leaders emerge, and values come to life. And while work drives purpose, I always make time for travel with my wife, fishing, and golf because success at Konecranes is about building both careers and lives with meaning.”
